أَصبَحَت أَوجُهُ القُبورِ وَضاءَ

أَصبَحَت أَوجُهُ القُبورِ وَضاءَ

وَغَدَت ظُلمَةُ القُبورِ ضِياءَ

وَغَدَت ظُلمَةُ القُبورِ ضِياءَ

The faces of the graves became radiant,

The faces of the graves became radiant,

And the darkness of the graves turned to light,

And the darkness of the graves became light.

يَومَ أَضحى طَريدَةً لِلمَنايا

يَومَ أَضحى طَريدَةً لِلمَنايا

فَفَقَدنا بِهِ الغِنى وَالغِناءَ

فَفَقَدنا بِهِ الغِنى وَالغِناءَ

On the day he became the quarry of death,

On the day he became prey to death,

And through his loss we lost wealth and song;

So, with his loss, we lost wealth and song.

يَومَ ظَلَّ الثَرى يَضُمُّ الثُرَيّا

يَومَ ظَلَّ الثَرى يَضُمُّ الثُرَيّا

فَعَدِمنا مِنهُ السَنا وَالسَناءَ

فَعَدِمنا مِنهُ السَنا وَالسَناءَ

The day the earth enfolded the Pleiades,

On the day the earth kept embracing the Pleiades,

And we were left without radiance or eminence;

So we lost his radiance and glory.

يَومَ فاتَت بِهِ بَوادِرَ شُؤمٍ

يَومَ فاتَت بِهِ بَوادِرَ شُؤمٍ

فَرُزينا بِهِ الثَرى وَالثَراءَ

فَرُزينا بِهِ الثَرى وَالثَراءَ

The day ill-omened harbingers carried him away,

On the day sudden strokes of ill fortune carried him off,

And through his loss we were bereft of land and riches;

So, with his loss, we were bereft of earth and wealth.

يَومَ أَلقى الرَدى عَلَيهِ جِراناً

يَومَ أَلقى الرَدى عَلَيهِ جِراناً

فَحُرِمنا بِهِ الجَدا وَالجِداءَ

فَحُرِمنا بِهِ الجَدا وَالجِداءَ

The day death laid its breast upon him,

On the day death laid its neck upon him,

And through his loss we were denied bounty and tender young;

So, with his loss, we were deprived of bounty and benefit.

يَومَ أَلوَت بِهِ هَناتُ اللَيالي

يَومَ أَلوَت بِهِ هَناتُ اللَيالي

فَلَبِسنا بِهِ البَلى وَالبَلاءَ

فَلَبِسنا بِهِ البَلى وَالبَلاءَ

The day the petty assaults of the nights destroyed him,

On the day the nights’ afflictions swept him away,

And through his loss we donned decay and affliction.

So, with his loss, we donned decay and affliction.
