    The eye sheds tears, and the heart melts.

    And anguish is present, while solace is absent.

    وَلِكُثرَةِ الجُهّالِ أَنتَ غَريبُ

    And because the noble are few, you are neglected;

    And because the ignorant are many, you are a stranger.

    By God, the means to wealth have passed you by

    Only because you are wise and cultured.

    So be patient; this consoles you for not attaining wealth:

    No illustrious, noble man attains it.

    They faulted my frown when my aim proved unattainable—

    Have you seen a full moon without a frown?

    And my body's pallor from ceaseless travel by night—

    Is there a crescent moon without pallor?

    And indeed, this attests to the fullness of my nobility:

    I am dear to the noble man's heart.

    And indeed, this has banished my sorrow and eased my distress:

    The base man is distressed at the sight of me.

    وَمِنَ العَجائِبِ لاعِبٌ مَطلوبُ

    Do not trifle, for behind you is a pursuer;

    And strange indeed is one who plays while being pursued!
