يَمُرُّpasses بيby me وَفدُthe envoy of الصِباthe east wind
وَاللَيلُwhile the night يَقضيcompletes نَحبُهُits allotted span
The east wind’s envoy passes by me,
The procession of youth passes me by
while the night breathes its last.
And the night fulfills its sorrow
مَرَّit passed بِرَوضٍby a meadow زاهِرٍflowering
ذَرَّsprouted عَلَيهِupon it عُشبُهُits grass
It passed by a flowering meadow,
It passed by a blossoming garden
upon which its grass had sprouted.
It scattered its plants upon it
فَخِلتُهُso I thought it مِنbecause of طيبِهِits fragrance
نَشوَةَthe scent of مَنthe one whom أُحِبُّهُI love him
So, for its fragrance, I took it for
So I was left without its fragrance
the scent of the one I love.
The delight of one I love
