قَفَعَshriveled البَردُthe cold ضَيفَthe guest of عَمروٍAmr فَأَضحىso he became
قَفَعَ البَردُ ضَيفَ عَمروٍ فَأَضحى
مِثلَlike مَنsomeone فيهِin whom ياO أُخَيَّmy little brother زَمانَهchronic infirmity
مِثلَ مَن فيهِ يا أُخَيَّ زَمانَه
The cold shriveled Amr’s guest, and he became
like one, my little brother, afflicted with chronic infirmity.
باتَhe spent the night لِلبَردِagainst the cold فيin ظَهارَةِan outer covering سوءٍwretchedness
باتَ لِلبَردِ في ظَهارَةِ سوءٍ
وَمِنَand from الجوعِhunger وَالطَوىand an empty belly فيin بِطانِهan inner lining
وَمِنَ الجوعِ وَالطَوى في بِطانِه
He spent the night in a wretched outer cloak against the cold,
with hunger and an empty belly for an inner lining.
وَهُوَand he قِدماًlong since لِلضَيفِfor the guest جوعٌhunger وَقَرُّand cold
وَهُوَ قِدماً لِلضَيفِ جوعٌ وَقَرُّ
وَلِمَولاهُand for his master ذِلَّةٌhumiliation وَمَهانَهand disgrace
وَلِمَولاهُ ذِلَّةٌ وَمَهانَه
And long has he been hunger and cold to the guest,
and humiliation and disgrace to his master.
