أَلوانَ ياقوتٍ زَها في عِقدِهِ
Ruby hues reveal their beauty to you—
Colors of rubies—he shows you their beauty,

ياoh حُسنَهاtheir beauty فيin كَفِّthe palm of مَنone who يُشبِهُهاresembles them
يا حُسنَها في كَفِّ مَن يُشبِهُها
فَاِنظُرso look إِلىat النَدِّthe equal بِكَفِّin the palm of نَدِّهِits equal
فَاِنظُر إِلى النَدِّ بِكَفِّ نَدِّهِ
How lovely they are in the hand of one who resembles them!
Oh, how lovely they are in the palm of one who resembles them!
Behold the counterpart in the palm of its counterpart:
So behold the equal in the palm of its equal:
مِنamong أَشهَلٍa gray-blue one كَعَينِهِlike his eye وَأَبيَضٍand a white one
مِن أَشهَلٍ كَعَينِهِ وَأَبيَضٍ
كَثَغرِهِlike his teeth وَأَحمَرٍand a red one كَخَدِّهِlike his cheek
كَثَغرِهِ وَأَحمَرٍ كَخَدِّهِ
among them, one blue-gray as his eye, and one white
among them, a gray-blue one like his eye, and a white one
as his teeth; one red as his cheek,
like his teeth, and a red one like his cheek,
وَأَصفَرٍand a yellow one مِثلَlike صَريعِone laid low by حُبِّهِlove for him
وَأَصفَرٍ مِثلَ صَريعِ حُبِّهِ
إِذاwhen تَغَشّاهُenvelop him غَواشيthe veils of صَدِّهِhis rejection
إِذا تَغَشّاهُ غَواشي صَدِّهِ
and one yellow as a lover felled by love of him,
and a yellow one like someone laid low by love for him,
when the shadows of his rebuff envelop him.
