يُعاوِدُ وَصلاً وَهوَ في حالِ هاجِرِ
Oh, what a wonder: one friendly toward you, yet shying away!
Oh, how strange is a companion who has left you
He renews union, yet remains estranged.
Yet tries to reconnect while still estranged

وِصالاً فَقُل في زائِرٍ غَيرِ زائِرِ
He visits despite the distance, yet has no wish for
He visits from afar but does not intend
Union—speak, then, of a visitor who is no visitor.
True reconnection, so say of the visitor who is no visitor
لَهُhe has فيin الذُراthe heights شَذرٌdarting motion يَمُرُّit passes وَيَنثَنيand turns back
لَهُ في الذُرا شَذرٌ يَمُرُّ وَيَنثَني
كَماjust as حَرَّكَmoved الكَعبَينِthe two dice كَفُّthe hand of مُقامِرِa gambler
كَما حَرَّكَ الكَعبَينِ كَفُّ مُقامِرِ
Among the heights he darts, passing and turning back,
He has in the horizon a spark that passes fleetingly
As a gambler's hand shakes the two dice.
As the dice player moves his heels
