أَياO عَجَباًwhat a wonder مِنat آنِسٍa friendly one لَكَto you نافِرٍone who shuns
أَيا عَجَباً مِن آنِسٍ لَكَ نافِرٍ
يُعاوِدُhe renews وَصلاًcloseness وَهوَwhile he فيin حالِthe state of هاجِرِone who shuns
يُعاوِدُ وَصلاً وَهوَ في حالِ هاجِرِ
Oh, what a wonder: one friendly to you, yet shunning you,
Who renews closeness while remaining estranged!
يَزورُhe visits عَلىdespite بُعدِthe distance of المَكانِthe place وَلَمand did not يُرِدwish
يَزورُ عَلى بُعدِ المَكانِ وَلَم يُرِد
وِصالاًunion فَقُلso speak فيof زائِرٍa visitor غَيرِother than زائِرِa visitor
وِصالاً فَقُل في زائِرٍ غَيرِ زائِرِ
He visits despite the distance, yet did not desire
Union—so speak of a visitor who is no visitor.
لَهُhis فيin الذُراthe heights شَذرٌscattered gleams يَمُرُّpasses وَيَنثَنيand bends back
لَهُ في الذُرا شَذرٌ يَمُرُّ وَيَنثَني
كَماas حَرَّكَset in motion الكَعبَينِthe two dice كَفُّthe hand of مُقامِرِa gambler
كَما حَرَّكَ الكَعبَينِ كَفُّ مُقامِرِ
His scattered gleams in the heights pass and bend back,
As a gambler’s hand sets the two dice in motion.
