ما إِن وَطِئنا فَناءَ زَيدٍ
حَتّىthan أَتَتناcame to us الكُؤوسُthe cups عَجلىin haste
حَتّى أَتَتنا الكُؤوسُ عَجلى
No sooner had we set foot in Zayd’s courtyard
No sooner had we set foot in Zayd's courtyard
than the goblets came hurrying to us.
than the cups came hurrying to us.
وَقالَand he said تَختارُyou choose صَوتَthe sound of نايٍa flute
وَقالَ تَختارُ صَوتَ نايٍ
فَقُلتُso I said أَختارُI choose صَوتَthe sound of مَقلىa frying pan
فَقُلتُ أَختارُ صَوتَ مَقلى
He said, “Would you choose the sound of a flute?”
And he said, 'Would you choose the sound of a flute?'
I said, “I choose the sound of a frying pan.”
So I said, 'I choose the sound of a frying pan.'
