خليليَّmy two friends ليسَis not الذُخرُthe treasure إلاexcept صنيعَةًa good deed
ولاand no صُنعَgood deed إلاunless أنthat تكونَthere be الدراهِمُthe dirhams
My two friends, there is no treasure but a good deed,
And no good deed can be done unless dirhams are at hand.
هيthey (the dirhams) البيضُthe white coins تثنيturn back البيضَthe white swords غيرnot being صوارمkeen blades
وهُنّand they إذاwhen ماemphatic particle ساعَدَتهاthey aid them (the swords) صوارِمُkeen blades
They are the white coins that turn back white swords, though no blades themselves;
And when they aid those swords, they too are keen blades.
وياand oh رُبَّماhow often تأتيcome السيوفُthe swords حواكِماًjudges
عليكَagainst you فتأتيthen they come وهيَwhile they are فيهاover them (the swords) حواكِمُjudges
And oh, how often swords come as judges
Against you, then the coins come as judges over them.
تُحاكيthey resemble نجومَstars الليلِthe night فِعلاًin action وخِلقَةًand in form
فهُنّfor they صغارٌsmall فيin العيونthe eyes أعاظِمُimmense
They resemble the stars of night in action and form;
For they are small to the eye, yet immense.
تقومُthey rise إذاwhen ماemphatic particle الحادِثاتthe calamities تشاجَرَتclash
فتُقعِدُthen they make sit down منهاamong them كلَّevery ماthing that هوit قائِمُstanding
They rise when calamities clash,
Then lay low every one of them that stands.
فمانِعُهاso one who withholds them إلاexcept عنfrom الحقِّwhat is right عارِفٌdiscerning
ومُؤثِرُهاand one who prefers them إلاّexcept علىover الحَمدِpraise عالِمُknowledgeable
So he who withholds them, but not from rightful claims, is discerning;
And he who prefers them, but not over praise, is wise.
فأعدِدso set aside لجُرحِfor the wound الحادِثاتthe calamities دراهماًdirhams
فهُنّfor they لجُرحِfor the wound الحادثاتِthe calamities مراهِمُsalves
So set aside dirhams for the wound calamities inflict;
For they are salves for the wound calamities inflict.
وعَوِّذand protect with charms بهاwith them الحاجاتِthe needs تنفِyou banish شِماسَهاtheir unruliness
فإنَّfor indeed بهاin them (the needs) جنّاًjinn وهُنَّand they (the coins) تمائِمُamulets
And use them as charms for your needs, banishing their unruliness;
For those needs harbor jinn, and the coins are amulets.
بهاthrough them تُدفَعُis repelled البلوىaffliction وتُدَّرَكُand are attained المنىthe wishes
وتُكتَسَبُand is gained العُلياeminence وتُبنَىand are built المكَارِمُnoble deeds
Through them, affliction is repelled and wishes attained,
And eminence is won and noble deeds are built.
