Many a night I pressed blindly through its darkness,
And many a night I groped through its darkness,
on a far-striding mount when strides grew short.
On a long-striding mount when strides grew short,

He sprang forward, scooping up the journey with us,
He set forth, scooping up the journey with us,
along paths where guidance itself groped blindly.
Along paths where guidance itself gropes blindly.

Foot-soreness deters mounts like him from night travel,
Foot-soreness bars those like him from traveling by night,
yet youth’s first vigor aided him, keeping soreness at bay.
And vigor aided him, keeping foot-soreness at bay.
