أَلا إِنَّ أَسبابَ الصَفاءِ تَصَرَّمَت

أَلا إِنَّ أَسبابَ الصَفاءِ تَصَرَّمَت

فَما لِمَوَدّاتِ الرِجالِ صَفاءُ

فَما لِمَوَدّاتِ الرِجالِ صَفاءُ

Lo, the bonds of sincere friendship have been severed;

Behold, the means of purity are shattered,

So men's affections hold no sincerity.

So friendship between men has no purity,

وَما لِجَميعِ العالِمينَ رِعايَةً

وَما لِجَميعِ العالِمينَ رِعايَةً

وَما لِجَميعِ العالِمينَ وَفاءُ

وَما لِجَميعِ العالِمينَ وَفاءُ

Nor is there care among all humankind,

Nor all the people of the world, loyalty,

Nor is there loyalty among all humankind.

Nor all the people of the world, fidelity.

أَلا إِنَّما آوى وَعَنقاءُ مَغرِبٍ

أَلا إِنَّما آوى وَعَنقاءُ مَغرِبٍ

وَعُرسُ وَإِخوانُ الصَفاءِ سَواءُ

وَعُرسُ وَإِخوانُ الصَفاءِ سَواءُ

Lo, Āwā and the ʿAnqāʾ of the West,

Behold, I have but an evening star of the west as friend,

And ʿUrs and brothers of sincere friendship are all just the same.

And a wedding party and brethren of purity as equal.
