أَلاtake heed إِنَّماonly النُعمىa kindness تُجازىis repaid بِمِثلِهاwith its like
إِذاwhen كانَis مَسداهاits bestowal إِلىto ماجِدٍa noble man حُرِّhonorable
Lo, a kindness is repaid in kind
Indeed, a kindness is repaid in kind only
when bestowed upon a noble, freeborn man;
When bestowed upon a noble, honorable man.
فَأَمّاbut as for إِذاwhen كانَتit is إِلىto غَيرِother than ماجِدٍa noble man
فَقَدthen indeed ذَهَبَتit goes to waste فيin غَيرِabsence of أَجرٍreward وَلاand no شُكرِgratitude
but if it is bestowed upon one who is not noble,
But when it is bestowed upon one who is not noble,
then it is lost—without reward and without thanks.
Then it goes to waste, without reward or gratitude.
إِذاwhen المَرءُthe man أَلقىcasts فيinto السِباخِthe salt flats بُذورَهُhis seeds
أَضاعَhe wastes فَلَمso did not تَرجِعthey return بِزَرعٍwith a crop وَلاnor بَذرِseed
When a man casts his seeds upon salt-barren ground,
When a man casts his seeds into salt flats,
he wastes them: they yield neither crop nor seed.
He wastes them, and they yield neither crop nor seed.
