أَإِنis it because تَدَرَّعتَyou armored yourself عِزّاًhonor
أَإِن تَدَرَّعتَ عِزّاً
وَإِنand because تَرَدَّيتَyou robed yourself زَيناsplendor
وَإِن تَرَدَّيتَ زَينا
Is it because you have armored yourself in honor,
Though you may don honor as a coat of mail
and robed yourself in splendor,
And deck yourself out in finery,
فيin رُتبَةٍa rank فَقَتyou excelled فيهاin it
في رُتبَةٍ فَقَت فيها
فَصِرتَso you became لِلمَجدِfor glory عَيناthe very essence
فَصِرتَ لِلمَجدِ عَينا
in a rank where you excelled,
Holding fast in a high station
and became the very essence of glory,
Where you keep glory under your eye—
نَقَصتَناyou gave us less مِنof دُعاءٍprayer
نَقَصتَنا مِن دُعاءٍ
إِذاwhenever كَتَبتَyou wrote إِلَيناto us
إِذا كَتَبتَ إِلَينا
that you have curtailed your prayers for us
Still, something is lacking if you withhold
whenever you write to us?
A prayer for us when you write.
فَإِنfor if تَرَفَّعتَyou rose higher أُخرىanother
فَإِن تَرَفَّعتَ أُخرى
إِذاthen فَعَلتَyou acted عَلَيناagainst us
إِذا فَعَلتَ عَلَينا
For if you rise yet another rank,
And if you wax proud another time
then you will have acted against us.
