إِنَّindeed أَباAbu (father of) عَمرٍAmr لَهُhe has لِحيَةٌa beard
إِنَّ أَبا عَمرٍ لَهُ لِحيَةٌ
بَعيدَةُdistant البَعضِone part مِنَfrom البَعضِanother part
بَعيدَةُ البَعضِ مِنَ البَعضِ
Indeed, Abu Amr has a beard
Abu Amr has a beard, long and wide,
with one part far from another.
Parted here and there, far and side.
مَضىhe went إِلىto السوقِthe market وَعُثنونُهُand his beard
مَضى إِلى السوقِ وَعُثنونُهُ
أَقامَstayed فيin البَيتِthe house فَلَمand did not يَمضِgo
أَقامَ في البَيتِ فَلَم يَمضِ
He went to the market, while his beard
He went to the market while his beard stayed,
stayed at home and did not go.
Remaining at home, not having strayed.
وَهوَand he إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle مَرَّpasses فيthrough سِكَّةٍa lane
وَهوَ إِذا ما مَرَّ في سِكَّةٍ
يَملَأُهاhe fills it بِالطولِin length وَالعَرضِand breadth
يَملَأُها بِالطولِ وَالعَرضِ
And whenever he passes through a lane,
When walking down a narrow street,
he fills it in length and breadth.
It would fill the whole width and length complete.
يَدوسُهاtread on it الناسُpeople بِأَقدامِهِمwith their feet
يَدوسُها الناسُ بِأَقدامِهِم
كَأَنَّهاas though it were أَرضٌground عَلىupon الأَرضِthe ground
كَأَنَّها أَرضٌ عَلى الأَرضِ
People tread on it with their feet,
People would step on it with their feet,
as though it were ground upon the ground.
Like it was extra ground beneath their feet.
