قَصَرتُI curtailed يَدَthe hand of الشِتاءِwinter بِحَرِّwith the heat of جَمرٍembers
وَأَختِand the sister of الجَمرِthe embers صافِيَةِclear الرَحيقِpure wine
I stayed winter's hand with the heat of embers,
And with the embers' sister—clear, pure wine.
تَرىyou see نَبذَscattered flecks of الرَمادِash بِوَجنَتَيهِon its two cheeks
كَكافورٍlike camphor يُذَرُّis sprinkled عَلىover خَلوقِsaffron perfume
You see flecks of ash upon its two cheeks,
Like camphor sprinkled over saffron perfume.
وَدارَand went round الكَأسُthe cup فيin يَدِthe hand of ذيone possessing دَلالٍcoy charm
رَشيقِslender القَدِّin figure يُعرَفُis known بِالرَشيقِas al-Rashiq (the Graceful)
And the cup went round in the hand of one with coy charm,
Slender of figure, known as al-Rashiq.
يُحَلّيhe adorns بِالتَبَسُّمِwith a smile دُرَّthe pearls of ثَغرٍa mouth

With a smile he adorns the pearls of his mouth,
Interlaced with slivers of agate.
رَأَيتُI saw الكَأسَthe cup فيin يَدِهِhis hand وَفيهِand his mouth
وَجَنحُwhile the wing of اللَيلِnight مُنصَرِفُdeparting الفَريقِthe company
I saw the cup in his hand and at his mouth,
While the wing of night withdrew with its company.
فَفيso in فَمِهِhis mouth هِلالٌa crescent فيin غُروبٍsetting
وَفيand in يَدِهِhis hand الثُرَيّاthe Pleiades فيin شُروقِrising
So at his mouth, a crescent was setting,
And in his hand, the Pleiades were rising.

And he gives me drink and drinks of pure wine,
Fit to be likened to saffron perfume.
كَأَنَّas though الكَأسَthe cup فيin يَدِهِhis hand وَفيهِand his mouth
عَقيقٌagate فيwithin عَقيقٍagate فيwithin عَقيقِagate
As though the cup, in his hand and at his mouth,
Were agate within agate within agate.
