يَأخُذُtakes away مِنّيfrom me الدَرسَstudy وَالكُتبُand books
I spend the night a stranger to sleep,
I spend the night a stranger to sleep;
as study and books rob me of it.
study and books take it from me.
وَقَيِّمُand the keeper الحِكمَةِwisdom فيin أَنمُليmy fingertips
يَصوغُshapes ماwhat يَسكُبُهُpours it forth اللُبُّthe intellect
The guardian of wisdom at my fingertips
And wisdom's keeper, in my fingertips,
fashions what the intellect pours forth.
shapes what the intellect pours forth.
أَنفِnose ضَميريmy mind حينَwhen أَرعَفتُهُI made it bleed
أَفرَغَpoured out ماwhat اِستَوعَبَهُhad contained it القَلبُthe heart
The nose of my conscience—when I make it bleed—
The nose of my mind—when I made it bleed,
pours out all that the heart has absorbed.
it poured out all the heart had contained.
لِسانُtongue كَفّيmy palm حينَwhen أَنطَقتُهُI made it speak
أَرضاكَpleased you مِنهُfrom it المَنطِقُspeech العَذبُsweet
The tongue of my palm—when I give it speech—
The tongue of my palm—when I made it speak,
delights you with its sweet discourse.
its sweet speech pleased you.

مُعَظَّمٌexalted فيin فِعلِهِits action نَدبُvaliant
Emaciated in form, frail,
Slender in its form, withered,
yet mighty in action and capable.
exalted in its deeds, valiant.
إِنif لَمnot يَكُنit is كَالعَضبِlike a keen sword فيin حَدِّهِits sharpness
فَإِنَّهُthen indeed it فيin فِعلِهِits action عَضبُa keen sword
Though it is not like a keen sword in its edge,
If it is not like a keen sword in sharpness,
in its effect it is indeed a keen sword.
then in its deeds it is a keen sword.

A man points it downward and thereby rises;
A man turns it downward and rises through it;
many a lowering ends in elevation.
and many a lowering is followed by a rise.

Since we came to know the delight of learning,
And since we have known the delight of learning, neither
neither sweets nor refreshing drink delight us.
the sweet nor the refreshing pleases us.
