يَأخُذُtakes مِنّيfrom me الدَرسَstudy وَالكُتبُand books
I spend the night a stranger to sleep;
I spent the night a stranger to my kind
Study and books take it from me.
Taking from me lesson and book
وَقَيِّمُand the keeper of الحِكمَةِwisdom فيin أَنمُليmy fingertips
يَصوغُfashions ماwhat يَسكُبُهُpours it forth اللُبُّthe intellect
And wisdom’s keeper is between my fingers,
The master of wisdom crafts in my fingers
Fashioning what the mind pours forth.
What my mind pours out
أَنفِthe nose of ضَميريmy inner self حينَwhen أَرعَفتُهُI made it bleed
أَفرَغَpoured out ماwhat اِستَوعَبَهُhad fully contained it القَلبُthe heart
The nose of my inner self—when I made it bleed,
When I unleashed my conscience
It poured out all the heart had held.
It emptied what my heart had contained
لِسانُthe tongue of كَفّيmy palm حينَwhen أَنطَقتُهُI made it speak
أَرضاكَpleased you مِنهُfrom it المَنطِقُspeech العَذبُsweet
My palm’s tongue—when I made it speak,
When I loosed my hand's tongue
Its sweet speech pleased you.
You were pleased by its sweet eloquence

مُعَظَّمٌesteemed فيin فِعلِهِits deeds نَدبُvaliant
Slender in its form, withered,
Deformed in his creation, withered
Esteemed for its deeds, valiant.
Glorified in his deed, excellent
إِنif لَمnot يَكُنit is كَالعَضبِlike a keen sword فيin حَدِّهِits edge
فَإِنَّهُthen indeed it فيin فِعلِهِits deeds عَضبُa keen sword
If its edge is unlike a keen sword’s,
If he is not like steel in his mettle
Then in its deeds it is indeed a keen sword.
Then in his deed he is steel
يَنكُسُهُturns it downward المَرءُa person فَيَعلوand so rises بِهِthrough it
وَرُبَّand many a نِكسٍlowering غِبُّهُits outcome نَصبُelevation
A man turns it downward and rises through it;
A man may debase him but he rises by him
And many a lowering ends in elevation.
And many a debased man, his glory casts him down

يَعجِبُناpleases us الحُلوَsweet food وَلاnor العَذبُfresh water
And since we have known the delight of learning, neither
Since we have known the joy of knowledge
Sweet food nor fresh water delights us.
Neither the sweet nor the fresh delight us
