قُلتُI said وَالراحُwhile the wine فيin أَكُفِّthe hands of النَدامىthe drinking companions
كَنُجومٍlike stars تَلوحُgleaming فيin أَبراجِcelestial mansions
I said, as wine rested in the drinking companions’ palms,
I said, while the wine in the drinking companions’ hands
like stars gleaming in their constellations:
Was like stars gleaming in celestial mansions:
أَمُداماًis it wine فَرَطتُمyou offered لِمُدامٍto wine
أَمor زُجاجاًglass سَبَكتُمُyou cast فيwithin زُجاجِglass
“Have you blended wine into my wine,
“Is it wine you have offered to wine,
or fused glass into glass?”
Or glass you have cast within glass?”
وَكَأَنَّand as though النُجومَthe stars وَاللَيلَwhile the night داجِis dark
نَقشَtracery of عاجٍivory يَلوحُgleaming فيin سَقفِa ceiling of ساجِteak
And the stars, while the night was deep-dark,
And it is as though the stars, while the night is dark,
were ivory dots gleaming in a ceiling of teak.
Were ivory tracery gleaming in a ceiling of teak.
