وَقَفتُI pinned عَلىon يَحيىYahya رَجائيmy hope وَإِنَّماand only
وَقَفتُI pinned عَلىon صَوبِthe downpour of الرَبيعِspring رَجائِياmy hope
I pinned my hope on Yahya; I was only
I placed my hopes on Yahya though
Pinning my hope on spring's downpour.
My hopes were set on springtime’s glow
إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle اللَياليthe nights أَدرَكَتthey attained ماwhat سَعَتthey strove لَهُfor it
تَمَطَّيتُI mounted جَدواهُhis bounty فَفُقتُso I surpassed اللَيالِياthe nights
Whenever the nights attain what they strive for,
When nights fulfil what they intend
I ride his bounty and outstrip the nights.
I spur them on that they may bend
إِذاwhen غابَhe is absent جاءَcame المُزنُthe rain clouds فيin الجودِgenerosity سابِقاًleading
وَإِنand if آبَhe returns جاءَcame المُزنُthe rain clouds فيin الجودِgenerosity تالِياfollowing
When he is absent, the rain clouds lead in generosity;
When one departs, another vies
And if he returns, the rain clouds follow in generosity.
In generosity - a new dawn rises
إِذاif الغَيثُthe rain باراهُrivaled him ثَنىturned back الغَيثُthe rain مُقصِراًfalling short
أَوِor البَرقُthe lightning جاراهُraced him ثَنىturned back البَرقُthe lightning كابِياfaltering
If rain rivals him, rain turns back, falling short;
Should clouds rain down in plenty’s fill
Or if lightning races him, lightning turns back, faltering.
Or lightning strike, both rain distil
فَتىًa youth لَمdid not نَزِنهُwe adorn him بِالقَوافيwith rhymes وَإِنَّماbut rather
حَطَطناwe alighted إِلَيهِto him كَيso that يَزينَhe might adorn القَوافِياthe rhymes
A youth we did not adorn with rhymes; rather,
A youth we weighed not with conceit
We alighted before him so he might adorn the rhymes.
But by him polished verses gleamed
مِنَamong الغُرِّthe illustrious لاحواthey shone أَشمُساًas suns وَمَضواand they were keen ظُبىًas sword blades
وَصالواand they charged أُسوداًas lions وَاِستَهَلّواand they poured down سَوارِياas night-rain clouds
Of the illustrious, who shone as suns and were keen as sword blades,
From caves, suns rose, gazelles sprang free
And charged as lions and poured like night-rain clouds.
Lions roared, steeds galloped wild and free
إِذاwhen مَعشَرٌa people فيin المَجدِglory كانواthey were هَوادِياleaders
فَقيسواthen they were compared بِهِwith him فيin المَجدِglory عادواthey became تَوالِياfollowers
Whenever a people were leaders in glory,
When a people glory attained
Compared with him in glory, they became followers.
By his glory they were retained
رَأَيتَyou saw جَمالَthe beauty الدَهرِof time فيكَin you مُجَدَّداًrenewed
فَكُنso be باقِياًenduring حَتّىuntil تَرىyou see الدَهرَtime فانِياperishing
You saw time's beauty renewed in yourself;
All time’s beauty lies within you
So live on until you see time pass away.
You remain, while ages are through
