قَدindeed خَصَصتُI singled out اللبيبَthe discerning man بالإكرامِwith honor
قَد خَصَصتُ اللبيبَ بالإكرامِ
وتهاونتُand I showed disregard بالجهولِfor the ignorant man العَبَامِthe dull-witted
وتهاونتُ بالجهولِ العَبَامِ
I have singled out the discerning for honor,
I have singled out the discerning man for honor,
and slighted the ignorant dullard.

إنّماonly تكرمُare honored الرجالُmen علىon account of الأحsound judgment (word beginning)
إنّما تكرمُ الرجالُ على الأح
لامِsound judgment (word ending) والفضلِand merit لاnot علىon account of الأَجسامِbodies
لامِ والفضلِ لا على الأَجسامِ
Men are honored only for their under—

ولوَand if أنthat الإكرامَhonor يُدركis attained بالأجthrough bodies (word beginning)
ولوَ أن الإكرامَ يُدرك بالأج
سامbodies (word ending) كانَwould be الإكرامُhonor للأنعامِfor livestock
سام كانَ الإكرامُ للأنعامِ
And if honor were attained through bod—
