I gave her as a gift, tame as a bride,

though she is the offspring of the wild and skittish.

She wears a tucked-up sable robe,

keeping its hems clear of dust.

And musk has flowed from her eye sockets,

then embraced her throat hollows and mouth together.

She struts in a robe adorned at the breast,

as though her sleeves were of striped cloth.

And her beak and nostril reddened,

like roses opening in the dew before dawn.

She seems, when pecking up her safflower seeds,

to strike a ruby against pearls.
