I checked winter’s hand with the heat of embers

and the embers’ sister, a clear, pure wine.

You see flecks of ash upon its two cheeks,

like camphor sprinkled over saffron perfume.

And the cup went round in the hand of a coy charmer,

graceful of figure, known as al-Rashiq.

With a smile he adorns his mouth’s pearls,

    interspersed with slivers of carnelian.

I saw the cup in his hand and at his mouth,

while night’s dark host was withdrawing.

In his mouth, then, a crescent was setting,

and in his hand the Pleiades were rising.

And he gives me drink and drinks of pure wine,

worthy of being likened to saffron perfume.

As though the cup, in his hand and at his mouth,

were carnelian within carnelian within carnelian.
