أَرانِيَhe showed me مِنهاجَthe path الهُدىguidance فَسَلَكتُهُso I followed it
وَلَمand did not تَتَشَعَّبbranch out فيinto الضَلالِerror مَذاهِبيmy paths
He showed me the path of guidance, and I followed it;
He showed me the path of guidance, and I followed it.
my paths did not branch away into error.
And my paths did not branch out into error.
وَخَبَّرَand he declared أَنَّthat الجَهلَfolly لَيسَis not بِآيِبٍreturning
إِلَيَّto me وَأَنَّand that الحُلمَforbearance لَيسَis not بِعازِبِdeparting
And he informed me that ignorance would not return
And he declared that folly would not return
to me, and that forbearance would not be absent.
to me, and that forbearance would not depart.
فَأَفصَحَso became eloquent مِنfrom بَعدِafter العُجومَةِinarticulateness مادِحيmy praiser
وَأَعجَمَand became inarticulate مِنfrom بَعدِafter الفَصاحَةِeloquence عائِبيmy detractor
Thus my panegyrist spoke eloquently after inarticulateness,
So my praiser grew eloquent after being inarticulate,
and after eloquence my faultfinder became inarticulate.
and my detractor grew inarticulate after being eloquent.
وَرَدَّand he directed إِلىtoward خَيرِthe best الأَنامِhumankind مَدائِحيmy praises
فَحَلَّتso they settled مَحَلَّin the place العِقدِof the necklace مِنon جيدِthe neck كاعِبِof a nubile maiden
And he returned my panegyrics to the best of humankind,
And he directed my praises toward the best of humankind,
so they settled like a necklace upon a nubile maiden’s neck.
so they took the place of a necklace on a nubile maiden’s neck.
