Fulfilling your promise of the knife is a noble deed,
Fulfilling your promise with the dagger is noble,
A radiant one—your generosity in it is undeniable.
Your overflowing generosity with it is undeniable.

لَهُ مَناطِقُ مِن بيضٍ وَمِن سودِ
How fine it is, blue amid purest white,
Do well by the bright blue amidst the crackled white,
With bands of white and of black.
It has belts of white and of black.
خُلفُfailure to fulfill الوَعيدِthe threat حَميدٌpraiseworthy لاnot يُذَمُّone is blamed بِهِfor it
خُلفُ الوَعيدِ حَميدٌ لا يُذَمُّ بِهِ
وَلَمand did not يَكُنbe خُلفُfailure to fulfill مَوعودٍsomething promised بِمَحمودِpraiseworthy
وَلَم يَكُن خُلفُ مَوعودٍ بِمَحمودِ
Failing to carry out a threat is praiseworthy; one is not blamed for it,
Breaking a threat is praiseworthy, it is not blamed,
But failing to keep a promise has never been praiseworthy.
And breaking a promise was never commended.
