جُلوسِيَmy sitting فيin سوقٍa market أَبيعُI sell وَأَشتَريand I buy
دَليلٌproof عَلىof أَنَّthat الأَنامَpeople قُرودُmonkeys
My sitting in a market, selling and buying,
is proof that people are monkeys.
وَلاand no خَيرَgood فيin قَومٍa people تُذَلُّare humiliated كِرامُهُمtheir noble ones
وَيَعظُمُand grows great فيهِمamong them نَذلُهُمُtheir scoundrel وَيَسودُand holds sway
And there is no good in a people whose noble ones are humiliated,
while their scoundrel grows great among them and holds sway.
وَيَهجوهُمand lampoons them عَنّيon my behalf رَثاثَةُshabbiness كِسوَتيmy clothing
هِجاءًa lampoon قَبيحاًugly ماthere is no عَلَيهِto it مَزيدُfurther addition
And the shabbiness of my clothing lampoons them on my behalf,
with an ugly lampoon to which nothing can be added.
