عَلَقَتhung أَباريقُewers المُدامِof wine بِكَفِّهِfrom his hand
كَالبَدرِlike the full moon يَعلُقُhangs بِالسِماكِbeside al-Simāk الأَعزَلِthe Unarmed
Wine ewers hung from his hand,
like the full moon hanging beside al-Simāk al-Aʿzal.
وَعَلاand rose دُخانُthe smoke النَدِّof incense أَبيَضَwhite ساطِعاًbillowing upward
مِثلَlike الغَمامَةِa cloud غَيرَexcept أَنthat لَمnot يُمهَلِwas allowed to linger
And incense smoke rose, white and billowing upward,
like a cloud, except that it was not allowed to linger.
فَكَأَنَّماso it was as though الكاساتُthe cups فيat حافاتِهِits edges
شُقرَchestnut-colored الخُيولِhorses تَجولُwheel about تَحتَbeneath القَسطَلِthe dust cloud
So the cups at its edges seemed
chestnut horses wheeling beneath the dust cloud.
