يَقولُhe sings لَناto us غَيرَother than ماwhat يُضرَبُis played
وَيُضرَبُand is played غَيرَother than الَّذيwhat نَحسُبُwe expect
He sings to us something other than what is played,
He sings to us something other than what is played,
And plays something other than what we expect—
And what is played is other than what we expect.
كَكيسانَlike Kaysan يَكتُبُhe writes غَيرَother than الَّذيwhat
يَقولُsay المُحَدِّثُthe narrator وَالمُكتِبُand the writing teacher
Like Kaysān, who writes something other than what
Like Kaysan, he writes something other than what
The traditionist and the writing master say.
The narrator and the writing teacher say.
فَيَكتُبُso he writes غَيرَother than الَّذيwhat قالَهُhe said it
وَيَقرَأُand he reads غَيرَother than الَّذيwhat يُكتَبُis written
Thus he writes something other than what was said,
So he writes something other than what he said,
And reads something other than what is written.
And reads something other than what is written.
فَصَمتاًso be silent إِذاif شِئتَyou wish إِطرابَناto delight us
فَنَحنُfor we إِذاwhen قُلتَyou speak لاnot نَطرَبُwe feel delight
So keep silent, if you wish to delight us;
So be silent if you wish to delight us,
For when you speak, we feel no delight.
For when you speak, we feel no delight.
وَلاand do not تَأتِيَنّيcome to me إِذاwhen جِئتَنيyou come to me
فَإِنّيfor indeed I إِذاwhen جِئتَنيyou come to me أَذهُبُI leave
And do not come to me when you visit me,
And never come to me when you come to me,
For when you visit me, I leave.
For when you come to me, I leave.
