أَثَغرٌ ما أَرى أَم أُقحُوانُ

وَقَدٌّ ما بَدا أَم خَيزَرانُ

وَقَدٌّ ما بَدا أَم خَيزَرانُ

Is it a mouth I see, or a chrysanthemum?

And is it a figure that has appeared, or bamboo?

وَطَرفٌ ما تَقَلَّبَ أَم حُسامٌ

وَطَرفٌ ما تَقَلَّبَ أَم حُسامٌ

وَلَفظٌ ما تَساقَط أَم جُمانُ

وَلَفظٌ ما تَساقَط أَم جُمانُ

And is it an eye that turns, or a keen sword?

And is it speech that spills forth, or pearls?

وَشَوقُ ما أُكابِدُ أَم حَريقٌ

وَشَوقُ ما أُكابِدُ أَم حَريقٌ

وَلَيلُ ما أُقاسي أَم زَمانُ

وَلَيلُ ما أُقاسي أَم زَمانُ

And is it longing I endure, or a blaze?

And is it a night I suffer, or an age?
