You do wrong—beyond the dwellings’ distance—by drawing still farther away,
You wrong me by keeping aloof, on top of the distance between our homes;
and when nearness comes, what succeeds you is born of distance’s anger.
And your faithlessness when near stems from separation’s wrath.

Great is my joy at his slightest faithfulness;
Great is my joy in his scant faithfulness;
and at lightning’s smile comes thunder’s guffaw.
And with lightning’s smile comes thunder’s loud laughter.
