أَماdo you not تَرىyou see عودَbough السَماءِof the sky نَضراfresh and green
أَما تَرى عودَ السَماءِ نَضرا
تَرىyou see لَهُit has طَلاقَةًcheerfulness وَبِشراand joy
تَرى لَهُ طَلاقَةً وَبِشرا
Do you not see heaven's return, fresh and radiant?
Do you not see the sky's bough, fresh and green?
You see in it openness and gladness.
You see in it cheerfulness and joy.
أَتَتهُcame to it أَلطافُgentle gifts السَحابِof the clouds تَترىone after another
أَتَتهُ أَلطافُ السَحابِ تَترى
وَساقَتِand drove الجَنوبُthe south wind غَيماًclouds بِكراvirgin
وَساقَتِ الجَنوبُ غَيماً بِكرا
The clouds' gentle gifts have come to it in succession,
The clouds' gentle gifts have come to it, one after another.
and the south wind has driven in a virgin cloud,
And the south wind has driven virgin clouds.
تَبسُطُspreads فيin الصَحراءِthe desert بُسطاًcarpets خُضراgreen
تَبسُطُ في الصَحراءِ بُسطاً خُضرا
وَتَمنَحُand grants الرَوضَةَthe meadow زُهراًblossoms صُفراyellow
وَتَمنَحُ الرَوضَةَ زُهراً صُفرا
spreading green carpets across the desert
It spreads green carpets across the desert,
and bestowing yellow blossoms on the meadow,
And grants the meadow yellow blossoms,
وَنَرجِساًand narcissi مِثلَlike العُيونِeyes زَهراradiant
وَنَرجِساً مِثلَ العُيونِ زَهرا
وَأُقحُواناًand chrysanthemums كَالثُغورِlike front teeth غُرّاgleaming white
وَأُقحُواناً كَالثُغورِ غُرّا
and radiant narcissi, like eyes,
And radiant narcissi, like eyes,
and gleaming chamomile, like bright smiles.
And chrysanthemums, gleaming white as teeth.
كَأَنَّماas though يَصوغُfashions فيهاin it تِبراraw gold
كَأَنَّما يَصوغُ فيها تِبرا
كَأَنَّماas though يَدوفُblends فيهاin it عِطراperfume
كَأَنَّما يَدوفُ فيها عِطرا
It is as though gold were being fashioned there,
As though it were fashioning raw gold there,
as though perfume were being blended there,
As though it were blending perfume there,
كَأَنَّماas though يَنثُرُscatters فيهاin it دُرّاpearls
كَأَنَّما يَنثُرُ فيها دُرّا
فَأَعمِلِso put to work الكاساتِthe cups شُمطاًwhite-streaked شَقراgolden-red
فَأَعمِلِ الكاساتِ شُمطاً شَقرا
as though pearls were being scattered there.
As though it were scattering pearls there.
So set the cups circulating, silver-flecked and amber,
So ply the cups, white-streaked and golden-red,
كَالماءِlike water لَوناًin color وَالعَبيرُand perfume نَشراin fragrance
كَالماءِ لَوناً وَالعَبيرُ نَشرا
ثُمَّthen مُرِbid الزيرِthe lute's treble string يُناغيconverse softly with الزَمراthe piping
ثُمَّ مُرِ الزيرِ يُناغي الزَمرا
like water in color and perfume in fragrance.
Like water in color, and perfume in fragrance.
Then bid the lute harmonize with the pipes.
Then bid the lute's treble string converse softly with the piping.
وَالعَيشُand life أَنto تَسُرَّgive joy أَوor تُسَرّاbe gladdened
وَالعَيشُ أَن تَسُرَّ أَو تُسَرّا
لاdo not تُفسِدَنَّever ruin بِالغَرامِwith consuming passion العُمراlife
لا تُفسِدَنَّ بِالغَرامِ العُمرا
For life is to give delight or to be delighted—
And life is to give joy or be gladdened.
never ruin a lifetime with tormenting love.
Never ruin your life with consuming passion.
