وَالنارُand the fire تَستَعجِلُhurries القُدوراthe cooking pots
I wrote, urging the boon companions to hurry,
I wrote, urging the drinking companions to hurry,
while the fire hastens the cooking pots.
While the fire hurries the cooking pots.
وَقَدand already أَتانيcame to me الغُلامُthe boy يَسعىrunning
بِأَرغُفٍwith loaves تُشبِهُresembling البُدوراthe full moons
The servant boy has come to me at a run,
And the boy has come to me, running,
with loaves resembling full moons.
With loaves resembling full moons.
وَعِندَناand with us قَهوَةٌwine شَمولٌheady wine
لَوif قُطِّعَتit were cut up صُيِّرَتit would be made into شُذوراgold fragments
And we have a heady wine—
And we have heady wine,
were it cut, it would turn into shards.
Which, if cut up, would become fragments of gold.

Before dilution, it is fire;
Before being mixed, it is fire;
once diluted, it turns into light.
Then, through mixing, it turns to light.
