ياoh لَهفَanguish نَفسيmy soul عَلىover زَمانٍa time
ضَيَّعتُهُI squandered it حيرَةًin bewilderment وَجَهلاand ignorance
Oh, how my soul regrets the time
I squandered in bewilderment and ignorance.
لَزِمتُI kept company with فيهِduring it اللَئيمَthe base man حَتّىuntil
مَلَلتُI grew weary مِنof قُربِهِhis company وَمَلّاand he grew weary
I kept company then with a base man until
I wearied of his company, and he wearied too.
خَدَمتُهُI served him فَاِستَفادَso he gained عِزّاًhonor
بِخِدمَتيthrough my service وَاِستَفَدتُand I gained ذُلّاhumiliation
I served him, so he gained honor
Through my service, while I gained humiliation.
وَلَيسَand is not ماwhat قَدindeed لَقيتُI experienced بِدعاًa novelty
مَنwhoever صَحِبَbefriends النَذلَthe scoundrel صارَbecomes نَذلاa scoundrel
And what I have suffered is nothing new:
Whoever befriends a scoundrel becomes a scoundrel.
