أَمَنعاًA refusal? إِذاwhen جِئتُكُمI came to you أَستَعيرُI ask to borrow
فَكَيفَthen how إِذاif جِئتُI came أَستَوهِبُI ask for a gift
Do you refuse me when I come to you to borrow?
If I come to borrow from you, how can you refuse?
Then how would it be if I came asking for a gift?
Yet if I come to ask outright for a gift, how much more will you give?
وَمِثليand one like me إِذاwhen كانَis فيamong مَعشَرٍa company of people
فَلِلعِزِّthen for glory عِندَهُمُamong them مَنكِبُa shoulder (support)
And when one like me is among a company,
One like me, if he keeps company with the great,
Then glory has a shoulder among them.
Will be offered a place of honor among them.
يُقَرَّبُis brought near مِثليone like me إِذاwhen ما(emphasis) نَأىhe is far away

وَيُكرَمُand is honored مِثليone like me إِذاwhen يَقرُبُhe draws near
One like me is brought near when he is far away,
One like me, if he withdraws into solitude,
And one like me is honored when he draws near.
Will be warmly welcomed when he returns.
عَتَبتُكَI reproached you لِلوُدِّout of love لاnot لِلقَلىout of hatred
وَواصِلand keep ties with صَديقاًa friend وَماand yet not تُعتِبُyou make amends
I reproached you out of love, not hatred;
I chide you out of affection, not resentment-
And keep ties with a friend, though you make no amends.
Keep faith with your friend, do not find fault with him.
