أَلَستَare you not تَرىyou see مَوتَthe death of العُلاeminence وَالفَضائِلِand the virtues
وَكَيفَand how غُروبُthe setting of النَجمِthe star بَينَamong الجَنادِلِthe stones
Do you not see the death of glory and virtue,
Do you not see the death of eminence and the virtues,
and how the star sets among the boulders?
and how the star has set among the stones?
فَماso what لِلمَناياwith death أَغفَلَتoverlooked كُلَّevery ناقِصٍone lacking merit
وَنَقَّبنَand they searched فيin الآفاقِthe horizons عَنfor كُلِّevery فاضِلِa virtuous person
Why do the fates overlook every deficient man,
Why has death passed over every man of little worth,
yet search the horizons for every man of virtue?
and scoured the horizons for every man of virtue?
عَلىin الرَغمِspite مِنof أَنفِthe nose of العُلاسيقَeminence; was driven لِلرَدىto death
بِكُلِّwith every كَريمِnoble الفِعلِdeed حُرِّnoble الشَمائِلِcharacter traits
To glory’s humiliation, driven to death was
Against eminence's will, to death was driven
every man noble in deed and free in character—
every man noble in deed and noble in character.
عَلىalthough أَنَّthat مَنwhoever أَبقَتهُit has spared him لَيسَis not بِخالِدٍimmortal
وَلَيسَand is not اِمرُؤٌa man يَرجوhopes for الخُلودَimmortality بِعاقِلِwise
though whomever it has spared is not immortal,
Yet whoever it has spared is not immortal,
and no man who hopes for immortality is wise.
and no man who hopes for immortality is wise.
رَأَيتُI saw المَناياdeath بَينَbetween غادٍone going forth in the morning وَرائِحٍand one returning in the evening
فَماso what لِلبَراياwith humankind بَينَbetween ساهٍan unmindful person وَغافِلِand a heedless person
I have seen the fates between one going in the morning and one going in the evening;
I have seen death going forth in the morning and returning in the evening;
why, then, are all creatures either unmindful or heedless?
so why are people either unmindful or heedless?
وَلَمand did not أَرَI see كَالدُنياlike the world حَبيباًa beloved مَضَرَّةًin harmfulness
وَلَمand did not أَرَI see مِثلَlike المَوتِdeath حَقّاًa truth كَباطِلِlike falsehood
Never have I seen a beloved as harmful as this world,
And I have never seen a beloved as harmful as the world,
nor have I seen a truth like death treated as falsehood.
nor have I seen a truth like death, resembling falsehood.
