Many a need have I entrusted

    to a people's nobleman or a base one;

then lo, the noble is one of the base,

or the base one of the noble.

Glory be to an all-powerful Lord,

who cut humankind from a hide!

So their highborn and their lowborn

are alike in folly and blame.

Their wealthy man's bounty has grown scant,

so their wealthy man is like the destitute.

And when you put their praiseworthy man to the test,

I found him worse than the blameworthy.

Never call upon them for small

    affairs, nor for great ones.

Look at the bulk of their bod-

ies, but do not ask them to fend off grave trouble.
