لَوif تَمَّwere complete شَيءٌanything مِنَof الدُنياthis world لِذيfor one possessing أَدَبٍliterary learning
لَاِنضافَwould be added مالٌwealth إِلىto عِلميmy learning وَآدابيand my literary accomplishments
If anything in this world were perfect for a man of letters,
wealth would be added to my learning and my literary accomplishments;
فَتَمَّthen would be complete جاهِيَmy standing عِندَamong الناسِthe people كُلَّهُمُall of them
وَطابَand would be sweet عَيشِيَmy life فيamong أَهليmy family وَأَصحابيand my friends
then my standing among all people would be complete,
and my life among my family and friends would be sweet.
عَزَّis hard to attain الكَمالُperfection فَلاso not يُحظىis blessed بِهِwith it أَحَدٌanyone
فَكُلُّfor every خَلقٍcreature وَإِنand even if لَمdoes not يَدرِknow ذوpossessing عابِa flaw
Perfection is elusive; no one is blessed with it;
for every creature, even if unaware, has a flaw.
