أَلاBehold! إِنَّماonly النُعمىkindness تُجازىis repaid بِمِثلِهاwith its like

إِذاwhen كانَis مَسداهاits bestowal إِلىupon ماجِدٍa noble man حُرِّfreeborn
إِذا كانَ مَسداها إِلى ماجِدٍ حُرِّ
Behold, kindness is repaid in kind only
when bestowed upon a noble, freeborn man.
فَأَمّاbut as for إِذاif كانَتit is إِلىupon غَيرِone who is not ماجِدٍnoble
فَأَمّا إِذا كانَت إِلى غَيرِ ماجِدٍ

فَقَد ذَهَبَت في غَيرِ أَجرٍ وَلا شُكرِ
But if it is bestowed upon one who is not noble,
then it is wasted, with neither reward nor thanks.

If a man casts his seeds into saline ground,
he wastes them, and they yield neither crop nor seed.
