أَتَراكَ تَسمَحُ بِالنَوا
لِcompletion of 'bounty' وَأَنتَwhile you تَبخُلُare stingy بِالسَلامِwith a greeting
لِ وَأَنتَ تَبخُلُ بِالسَلامِ
Can I imagine you bestowing boun—
Do you suppose you would bestow bounty,
—ty, when you begrudge even a greeting?
while you begrudge a greeting?
لاdo not توحِشُalienate النَفرَthe folk الكِراthe noble (word continues)
لا توحِشُ النَفرَ الكِرا
مَcompletion of 'the noble' فَأَنتَfor you مِنamong نَفَرٍfolk كِرامِnoble
مَ فَأَنتَ مِن نَفَرٍ كِرامِ
Do not alienate that company of nob—
Do not alienate the noble folk,
—le souls—for you yourself belong to a noble company.
for you are of noble folk.
قَدindeed ضَلَّhas gone astray مَنwhoever لاdoes not يَشتَريbuy
قَد ضَلَّ مَن لا يَشتَري
وَدَّthe affection الأَكارِمِof the noblest بِالكَلامِwith words
وَدَّ الأَكارِمِ بِالكَلامِ
Surely lost is he who will not purchase
He has indeed gone astray who does not buy
the noble-hearted’s affection with mere words.
