لَعَمرُكَby your life لَمnot تُبَقَّleave لَناfor us سُكوناًpeace
شُكاةٌan ailment ماnot اِستَطَعتَyou were able بِهاwith it حِراكاmovement
By your life, it has left us no repose—
By your life, no peace was left to us
an illness through which you could not stir.
by an ailment that left you unable to move.
رَماكَit struck you الدَهرُTime عَنby عَرضٍchance وَلَكِنbut
أَصابَit struck حَشاthe heart المَكارِمَnoble virtues إِذwhen رَماكاit struck you
Time shot at you almost in passing; yet
Time struck you by chance, but
when it shot, it struck the very heart of noble virtues.
it struck the heart of noble virtues when it struck you.
وَلَمّاand when أَنthat بَلاكَit afflicted you بُليتُI was afflicted حُزناًwith grief
فَماso not يُدرىis known بَلائيmy affliction مِنfrom بَلاكاyour affliction
And when it afflicted you, I too was afflicted with grief,
And when it afflicted you, I was afflicted with grief,
so no one can distinguish my affliction from yours.
so my affliction cannot be distinguished from yours.
مُنيتُI was afflicted بِهاwith it فَماyet not أَشفَقتَyou feared مِنهاof it
وَأَشفَقَتِand feared العُلاglory مِماfrom what مَناكاafflicted you
You were stricken with it, yet you showed it no fear,
I was afflicted with it, yet you did not fear it,
while high glory feared for you when it afflicted you.
and Glory feared what afflicted you.
صَبَرتَyou bore patiently لَهاwith it وَلَمand not تُخلَقyou were created جَزوعاًfainthearted
فَتَبكيso you weep فيamid الشَدائِدِhardships أَوor تَباكىyou feign weeping
You bore it patiently, and were not created fainthearted,
You bore it patiently; you were not made fainthearted,
to weep in adversity, even to make a show of weeping.
so as to weep amid hardships or feign weeping.
وَإِنَّكَand indeed you إِنif أُذيتَyou are hurt بِكُلِّby every سوءٍill
فَلَيسَthen is not بِمُنقَضٍcoming to an end أَبَداًever أَذاكاyour suffering
And even if you are made to suffer every kind of evil,
And indeed, if you are afflicted with every ill,
your suffering will never, ever come to an end.
then your suffering will never come to an end.
