ألاIndeed ليسis not فيin الإعدامِpoverty عارٌshame علىupon الفتىthe young man
ولكنand yet أشدُّthe gravest العارِshame فيin دَنَسِdefilement العرضِhonor
Behold: poverty is no disgrace to a young man;
Indeed, poverty brings no shame upon a young man.
but the deeper disgrace lies in a stain upon his honor.
But the gravest shame lies in the defilement of honor.
وماand not طُولُlength عمريmy life أنthat يطولَgrows long بهwith it المدىthe span
ولكنهُand yet it is طولُduration المسرةِjoy والخفضِand ease
A life is not long merely because its span extends;
My life's length is not the lengthening of its span,
its true measure is the duration of joy and ease.
but the duration of joy and ease.
وماand not الميتُthe dead person إلاexcept كلevery منone who ماتَhas died ذِكرُهُremembrance of him
وماتَand has died عنaway from الإِسعافِgiving aid بالقَرضِthrough loans والفَرضِand gifts
No one is truly dead but he whose memory has died,
The dead are only those whose remembrance has died,
and who is dead to helping others, whether by lending or fulfilling a duty.
and who are dead to giving aid through loans and gifts.

The passing of time gladdens me; whenever
The passage of time gladdens me, and whenever
some of time’s days pass, a part of me passes away.
some of time's days pass, a part of me passes too.
