And a meadow, its breasts adorned,

Its hollows and its breasts clothed,

    Praiseworthy in experience and appearance,

Delightful in what is folded and unfurled,

Wondrous in what is visible and concealed,

    Smiling like a joyful visitor,

    Weeping like a forsaken lover.

The rain bejeweled it without jewels:

Anemones like a drunken man's eye,

And daisies like the teeth of houris,

And narcissi like stars in deep darkness.

And dew is scattered upon stock blossoms,

    Inlaying ruby with crystal.

I visited it early, and good fortune lay in my early rising,

While dawn's light was tinged with night,

As when you mix musk with camphor,

With a vigorous hawk, fierce and bold.

You would think it wore a buttoned coat,

Its wings folded over sable fur,

    Its beak and talon curved,

Like the letter jīm at the ends of lines.
