تُغَنّي عَلى أَعرافِ غيدٍ نَواعِمِ
I passed by dusky-shirted, black-turbaned ones,
Singing on the crowns of slender, tender beauties.
زُهينَthey took pride بِأَصداغٍin sidelocks تَروقُthat delight كَأَنَّهاas though they were

نُجومٌ عَلى أَعضادِ أَسوَدَ فاحِمِ
They took pride in lovely sidelocks, as though they were
Stars upon the upper arms of a coal-black man.

You see gold they have laid beneath hindquarters
Of theirs, and silver they have hung upon their fronts.

And silk-and-wool cloth and brocade, jet-black and dusky!
