خُبزُbread الأَميرُthe emir’s عَشيقُهُhis beloved
يَغدوhe goes each morning عَلَيهِto it يُلاعِبُهhe plays with it
The emir’s bread is his beloved.
The prince's bread is his lover
He goes to it each morning, playing with it.
He rises early to play with him
وَإِذاand when بَداit appears لِجَليسِهِto his companion
أَفضىhe draws close إِلَيهِto it يُعاتِبُهhe reproaches it
And when it appears before his companion,
And when he appears before his companion
he draws close to it, reproaching it.
He confides in him, reproaching him
وَتَحوطُهُand surround it أَحراسُهُhis guards
وَتَذِبُّand ward off عَنهُfrom it كَتائِبُهhis battalions
His guards surround it,
His guards surround him
and his battalions defend it.
And his troops protect him
فَالزَورُso the visitors يُصفَعُare slapped عِندَهُin his presence
وَالضَيفُand the guest يُنتَفُis plucked شارِبُهhis mustache
So visitors are slapped in his presence,
So falsehood is slapped in his presence
and the guest has his mustache plucked.
And the guest's moustache is plucked
