ظَلَّkept on يَسقيwatering حَدائِقاًgardens وَجِناناًand orchards
ياoh لَهاfor them (exclamatory) مِنof حَدائِقٍgardens وَجِنانِand orchards
He kept watering gardens and groves—
It kept watering gardens and orchards.
what gardens and groves they were!
Oh, what gardens and orchards!
خَطَرَتglided بَينَهاamong them الرِياحُthe winds سُحَيراًjust before dawn
فَتَناصَتso they seized one another’s forelocks تَناصِيَthe forelock-grappling of الأَقرانِthe rivals
In the hours before dawn, the winds moved gracefully among them,
The winds glided among them just before dawn,
and seized one another by the forelocks, as rivals do.
so they grappled by the forelocks like rivals.
وَتَناجىand whispered to one another الغُصونُthe branches فيهاwithin them سِراراًsecretly
وَتَنادىand called to one another الطُيورُthe birds بِالإِعلانِaloud
The branches whispered together there in secret,
And the branches whispered secretly to one another within them,
while the birds called to one another aloud.
and the birds called to one another aloud.
فَتَناجيso the whispering of الغُصونِthe branches شِبهُa likeness of عِتابٍreproach
وَتَناديand the calling of الطُيورِthe birds مِثلُlike أَغانٍsongs
The branches’ whispering was like reproach,
So the branches’ whispering was like reproach,
and the birds’ calling like songs
and the birds’ calls were like songs.
مِنof كُرومٍvines تَمايَلَتswayed بِعَناقيwith grape clusters (word continued)
دَcompletes the preceding word “clusters” كَجَعدِlike the curls of الزُنوجِBlack Africans وَالحُبشانِand Abyssinians
from grapevines that swayed with clusters,
Of vines that swayed with grape clusters,
like the curls of Black Africans and Abyssinians.
like the curls of Black Africans and Abyssinians;
وَمُلاحِيَّةٌand a Mulāḥī white grape تُمَيِّلُmakes sway أُخرىanother
كَوُجوهِlike the faces of الخَرائِدِthe virgin maidens الغُرّانِfair-faced
A Mulāḥiyya cluster made another sway,
and one Mulāḥī grape sets another swaying,
like the faces of radiant, sheltered maidens—
like the faces of fair maidens,
كَلَآلٍlike pearls تَشَبَّثَتclung بِلَآلٍto pearls
وَبَنانٍand fingers تَشَبَّكَتintertwined بِبَنانِwith fingers
like pearls clinging to pearls,
like pearls clinging to pearls,
and fingers interlaced with fingers.
and fingers intertwined with fingers.
فَهيَso it is كَالنَجمِlike a star فيin فُروعِthe branches of كُرومٍvines
وَهيَand it is كَالشَمسِlike the sun فيin بُطونِthe bellies of الدَنانِthe wine jars
It is like a star among the grapevine branches,
So it is like a star in the branches of vines,
and like the sun within the bellies of wine jars.
and it is like the sun in the bellies of wine jars.
