جَرَيتَyou ran لِعارِضٍtoward a cloud غَيثِrain اللَياليthe nights
تَحالَكَgrew pitch-black لَونُهُits color فَاِبيَضَّthen turned white جُلُّهmost of it
You ran toward a cloud of the nights’ rain;
Its color grew pitch-black, then most of it turned white.
وَصِرتَand you began تَقُصُّclipping ماwhatever يَبيَضُّturns white مِنهُof it
أَتَحلِقُهُwill you shave it? إِذاwhen ماan emphatic particle اِبيَضَّturns white كُلُّهall of it
And you began clipping whatever of it turns white—
Will you shave it when it all turns white?
تَعَزَّconsole yourself عَنِfor the loss of الشَبيبَةِyouth وَاِلهُand turn your attention away عَنهاfrom it
فَإِنَّfor indeed اللَيلَthe night لَيسَdoes not يَدومُlast ظِلُّهits shadow
Console yourself for lost youth, and turn your thoughts from it;
For the night’s shadow does not last.
وَخَلِّand let الشَيبَgray hair يَضحَكُlaugh ناجِذاهُits two molars
فَإِنَّfor indeed الصُبحَthe dawn لاnot يَخفىis hidden مَطَلُّهits rising
And let gray hair laugh with both its molars showing;
For dawn’s rising cannot be hidden.
وَإِنand if حُلَّتare loosened عُراbonds اللَذّاتِpleasures فيهِin it
فَلَستَthen you are not بِعاقِدٍone who binds ماwhat جَذَّsevered حَبلُهits cord
And if pleasure’s bonds are loosened in it,
Then you cannot retie what has had its cord severed.
