وَإِذاand when شَتَوتُI spend the winter أَمِنتُI am safe from لَسعَةَthe sting of عَقرَبٍa scorpion
وَإِذا شَتَوتُ أَمِنتُ لَسعَةَ عَقرَبٍ
كَالنارِlike fire طارَتit flew مِنfrom زِنادِthe flint of القادِحِthe fire-striker
كَالنارِ طارَت مِن زِنادِ القادِحِ
And when I pass the winter, I am safe from a scorpion’s sting—
And in winter, I am safe from the sting of a scorpion,
like fire, it flew from the fire-striker’s flint.
Like fire that flew from the fire-striker's flint.
قَدindeed خِلتُهاI thought it تَمشيit walks بِسَبحَةِwith the prayer beads of عابِدٍa worshipper
قَد خِلتُها تَمشي بِسَبحَةِ عابِدٍ
كَلّاno لَقَدcertainly تَمشيit walks بِصَعدَةِwith the lance of رامِحِa spearman
كَلّا لَقَد تَمشي بِصَعدَةِ رامِحِ
I had thought it moved along a worshipper’s prayer beads;
I had thought it walked with a worshipper's prayer beads;
no—it truly moves along a spearman’s lance.
No—indeed, it walks with a spearman's lance.
