يُقلِلُ إِكثارُ الذَميلِ ذَميلَها
And there set down the saddles of sunken-eyed, weary camels,
He gathered with it bundles of fragrant reed,
whose much trotting slows their trot,
The abundance of bundles diminishes their fragrance.

وَأَقلَقَ هِجرانُ الحَبيبِ مَقيلَها
so we may drain a tear whose tether parting has loosed,
Shedding tears, separation has untied its knots,
and whose repose the beloved’s desertion has disturbed.
And the departure of the beloved has disturbed its abode.

No wonder, then, that a love-stricken man’s tears overflowed
So it is no wonder that the tears of the bereaved
upon the dwelling, their dew watering its ruins.
Flow over the abode, their flowing waters its longing.
