وَمُفتَنَةِand varied الأَلوانِin color بيضٌwhite وُجوهُهاtheir faces
وَمُفتَنَةِ الأَلوانِ بيضٌ وُجوهُها
وَنُمرٌand mottled تَراقيهاtheir upper chests وَصُفرٌand yellow جُنوبُهاtheir flanks
وَنُمرٌ تَراقيها وَصُفرٌ جُنوبُها
And many-hued ones, whose faces are white,
Their throats mottled and their flanks yellow.
كَأَنَّas though دَراريعاًtunics عَلَيهاupon them قَصيرَةًshort
كَأَنَّ دَراريعاً عَلَيها قَصيرَةً
مُرَقَّعَةًpatched أَعطافُهاtheir sides وَجُيوبُهاand their neck openings
مُرَقَّعَةً أَعطافُها وَجُيوبُها
As though they wore short tunics,
Patched at their sides and neck openings.
تُعَدِّلُthey modulate أَلوانَvarieties الأَغانيsongs كَأَنَّماas though
تُعَدِّلُ أَلوانَ الأَغاني كَأَنَّما
تُعَدِّلُmodulates أَوزانَrhythms الأَغانيsongs عَريبُهاtheir ʿArīb
تُعَدِّلُ أَوزانَ الأَغاني عَريبُها
They modulate the varieties of song, as though
Their ʿArīb were modulating the rhythms of song.
تُسامُthey are tasked with اِستِقاءًdrawing water فيin العَشاءَthe evening إِذاwhen عَراit arrives
تُسامُ اِستِقاءً في العَشاءَ إِذا عَرا
وَعَطَّلَand rendered idle أَيّامَthe days of المَصيفِsummer ذُنوبُهاtheir water-bucket
وَعَطَّلَ أَيّامَ المَصيفِ ذُنوبُها
They are made to draw water when evening comes,
And their water-bucket is left idle through summer’s days.
