وَقَدand already شَغَلَتoccupied كِلتاboth يَدَيهِhis hands بِقَهوَةٍwith wine
فَقُلتُso I said أَرىI see نَجمَينِtwo stars أَمor قَدَحَينِtwo goblets
And both his hands were occupied with wine,
With both his hands busy making coffee
so I said, “Do I see two stars or two goblets?”
I said, “Are those two stars or two cups I see?”
كَأَنَّas though خَيالَreflection الكَأسِthe cup فَوقَupon ذِراعِهِhis arm
غِشاءٌa veil مِنَof العِقيانِpure gold فَوقَover لُجَينِsilver
As though the cup’s reflection upon his arm
As if the phantom goblet on his arm
were a veil of pure gold over silver.
Were a veil of mist over two moons.
