لَبِسنَ ظَلاماً بِالصَباحِ مُرَقَّعا
Alike in form, yet differing within that very form,
And birds alike in shape, yet differing in it,
They donned darkness, patched with morning light.
Donned darkness patched with morning light.
أَخَذنَthey took مِنَfrom الكافورِcamphor أَنفاًa nose وَمِنسَراًand a beak
أَخَذنَ مِنَ الكافورِ أَنفاً وَمِنسَراً

وَخَضَّبنَ بِالحِنّاءِ كَفّاً وَأَصبَعا
From camphor they took a nose and beak,
They took from camphor a nose and a beak,
And dyed palm and finger with henna.
And dyed a palm and a finger with henna.

They gaze with eyes which, whenever they turn them,
And they gaze with eyes; when they turn them,
Reveal to the beholder agate set like a jewel.
They reveal agate, set like jewels, before the eyes.

They fly with wings like shears, as though they were
Boulders flung three and four at a time.
Boulders flung three and four at a time.

كَأَنَّ مَجاذيفا تَبوغُ بِها مَعا
Those wings beat them through the air without pause,
With them they sweep through the air without pause,
As though oars were driving them all in unison.
As though oars were sweeping them onward together.

When they drink deep from the pool, you would think them
When they gulp from the pool, you would think them
Feeding hungry chicks in cavern nests.
Feeding hungry chicks beak to beak in caves.
